It was inevitable. I knew someday this would happen and I thought I was prepared, but the day has finally come. I will need to start a new journal.
I’ve been keeping a daily journal since September 15th and it has become part of my routine. I love being able to go back and see what’ I’ve been up to. I also can remember things as I read that I normally would have forgotten. My brain is very easy to throw things in the “don’t need to remember that” folder and journaling has helped me get away from that. I’m hooked.
Since starting, I’ve looked for ways to improve the journal and make it more interesting to read and look at besides just writing a daily summary in it. I write small poems or song lyrics. At the start of the year I drew in a January calendar and have been keeping a weekly breakdown as I move through the month. This has been helpful in keeping up with my goals for January (you remember when I did that right?). I’ve done some random pages listing different things that I like at this moment in time in order to give a snapshot at what interests me today.
I’m still looking to add more. I want to make it a little more of an art project that has a cool look and feel to it. I’ve started a Pinterest board where I find neat ideas I want to steal – I mean, uh, emulate. I’ve also gone by Hobby Lobby (I know, I know) and seen what I can use. Most of the things that are available for journal accessory stuff is geared towards children and teenage girls. Not saying that no one can use them in their own stuff, it’s just that I’m not their target audience. Still, there are some things that I could use. I love the look of the traveler’s journal that looks like it’s been taken over the world and has all kinds of stuff crammed in there. Inside can be found postcards, vintage pictures, sketches of buildings, stamps, and all sorts of kitschy stuff that makes me think it’s a book out of steampunk. I’m a fan. I’m keeping my crafty budget (oh Lord, I now have a craft budget) to about 20-30 bucks a month to add stuff in my journal. Stuff from Hobby Lobby is expensive folks. That doesn’t get you much.
So, I have another basic journal that I have waiting in the wings for me to start and I’ll use more stuff for a visual look when I break that bad boy open in another week. I also have been toying with the idea of getting an actual traveler’s journal to make a yearly highlight book for 2018. It may be neat to have one each year to go back over. (Like I don’t have enough to do. This is becoming a minor obsession.) If you have journaling tips or cool journal hacks, post them below. I’m always scouring the web for cool ideas.
